Porcelain Crowns
These
are similar to veneers, but are selected for teeth that are weaker,
more brittle, worn, or more irregular. Unlike veneers, they
are bonded all
the way around the tooth to add strength and durability.
Large-scale defects in the tooth can be caused by grinding, tooth
decay, chipping, or cracking of the tooth. Any of these defects
could make it necessary to place a crown to protect and preserve
the remaining tooth structure.
Although gold or porcelain-fused-to-gold crowns are still used,
all porcelain crowns from pure ceramic or reinforced ceramic have
become more popular, especially for front teeth that are obvious
when smiling or talking, and are virtually indistinguishable from
natural teeth.
